Building an Offline Food Database
1st Jul, 2026The last few weeks I have been working hard on Bearly Fit's built in food database.
To compliment the barcode search, I wanted a completely offline food database complete with:
- Nutritional information
- Flags (things like No added sugar, Palm Oil Free, Vegan, Halal etc)
- Nutriscore + Ecoscore where possible
- Searchable tags
- Searchable Categories
- Varied portion sizes
I've managed to build a database of about 2300 items, completely searchable and loggable without the need for an internet connection.
Free users will be able to use Barcode scanning and access to 500~ staple foods offline (think basic meats, fruit, veg, jams, oils, breads etc). Subs will get access to the full offline database.
This week i've been working on the UI, bringing it in line with the rest of the app and trying to make the information easy to read and presentable. Still some work to go but I hope in the next week or so I'll have it ready for release.
Let me know what you think :)
Oh! also on the side: I've been working through merch ideas, rebuilding the code base into Expo 56 and designing the Bearly Fit "Portal" which I hope to launch later this year.
