The Shoulder Press is a staple around here - straightforward, strong, and perfect for building a proud bear frame. Press the weight overhead like you're hoisting the camp flag or reaching for the top shelf of honey. It hits the delts, triceps, and upper chest, giving you that broad, steady look that says, 'Yep, this bear means business.'

Instructions

  1. For Dumbbells: Sit on a bench with back support or stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward or slightly inward.
  2. Engage your core and press both dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended without locking your elbows.
  3. Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height in a controlled manner.
  4. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
  5. For Cable Machine: Set two low pulleys and attach single handles. Stand or sit between them, holding a handle in each hand at shoulder height.
  6. Press both handles upward until your arms are extended overhead, then lower them back to the starting position.
  7. Repeat as desired.

Benefits

  • Builds strength and mass in the shoulders.
  • Improves pressing power and overhead stability.
  • Engages triceps and upper chest as secondary muscles.
  • Can be performed seated or standing for variation.
  • Helps enhance athletic performance and daily overhead tasks.

Key Points

  • Keep your back straight and core engaged to support proper posture.
  • Do not lock out your elbows at the top.
  • Press directly overhead, not forward or backward.
  • Move in a controlled manner - avoid using momentum.
  • Breathe out on the press and inhale as you lower.

Common Mistakes

  • Using excessive weight and sacrificing form.
  • Arching the lower back excessively.
  • Flaring elbows too far out or letting them drop too low.
  • Rushing the reps or bouncing at the bottom.
  • Neglecting to engage the core for stability.
